China calls for calm as Thailand-Cambodia border dispute escalates

(MENAFN) China on Tuesday called on Thailand and Cambodia to "exercise restraint" to prevent the situation along their shared border from worsening, according to reports.

During a regular press briefing in Beijing, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated, "As a friend and close neighbor of Cambodia and Thailand, China sincerely hopes that both sides exercise restraint and work in the same direction to prevent further escalation." The spokesperson added that "China will continue to play a constructive role in de-escalation, in its own way."

Japan also voiced concern over the situation, stressing the importance of maintaining peace between the two neighbors. According to reports, Tokyo emphasized that "The improvement of the relations between Cambodia and Thailand is indispensable for the stability and development of the entire region," and urged both sides to "observe the ceasefire agreement, exercise maximum restraint, and seek a peaceful resolution through dialogue, following the spirit of the Joint Declaration on October 26."

The warnings followed renewed clashes after both Bangkok and Phnom Penh accused each other of violating the ceasefire pact signed on October 26 during the ASEAN Summit. The agreement, which aimed to resolve a long-standing border dispute, had been brokered with the assistance of international mediators, including a U.S. president and a Malaysian leader.

The border conflict, which reignited deadly confrontations in July, had previously displaced thousands of residents before the fragile ceasefire was established.
