Trump calls for Cambodia, Thailand to uphold border ceasefire

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has urged Cambodia and Thailand to fully respect their ceasefire commitments following renewed violence along their contested border, according to a senior administration official. Reports indicate the official, speaking anonymously, said that “President Trump is committed to the continued cessation of violence and expects the governments of Cambodia and Thailand to fully honor their commitments to end this conflict.”

The warning comes after Thailand carried out airstrikes early Monday in retaliation for a prior Cambodian attack that killed at least one Thai soldier and injured several others, threatening the fragile truce signed in October in Kuala Lumpur with Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim present.

Tensions flared last month when Thailand suspended prior de-escalation measures after a landmine explosion in Si Sa Ket province wounded four Thai soldiers. Earlier, in July, the two countries had agreed to an unconditional ceasefire during a trilateral meeting hosted by Anwar, bringing a temporary halt to weeks of intense border fighting.
